    What is cmi5?

    Definition

cmi5 is a profile of xAPI that defines a standardized contract between a Learning Management System and learning content (often called SCORM's successor). It specifies exactly how an LMS launches content, what data it must track, and how content communicates completion and performance back to the LMS. cmi5 combines xAPI's flexibility with SCORM's structural rigor, making content portable and data predictable.

    In short

    cmi5 at a glance.

Defines how LMS launches and tracks content execution
Built on xAPI to enable richer data capture than SCORM
Ensures content is portable across different LMS platforms
Promises consistent completion and performance reporting

    cmi5: SCORM Reimagined on xAPI

cmi5 solves portability without sacrificing structure. With SCORM, content and LMS agree on a narrow contract (pass/fail, completion). With cmi5, that contract is much richer—it can track attempts, mastery, interactions, and more—yet it is still strict enough that content built for one LMS runs in another. This makes cmi5 attractive for enterprises with heterogeneous learning infrastructure or content vendors serving multiple customers.

    cmi5 — frequently asked

No. cmi5 is built on xAPI and captures richer data. SCORM is a decade older and uses a different protocol. Both serve the same purpose—standardizing LMS-content communication—but cmi5 is the modern evolution and is backward-incompatible with SCORM.

If your current SCORM setup works well, migration is not urgent. But if you need richer learner analytics, mobile support, or multi-LMS portability, cmi5 is worth evaluating. The main cost is updating or re-authoring content to the new profile.

cmi5 can track multiple attempts, specific interaction details, skills mastered, time spent per section, and contextual data about how content was accessed. SCORM typically limits tracking to completion status, score, and total time.
