    What is Accessibility (WCAG)?

    Accessibility, defined by the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), refers to the design and development of digital products and content that are usable by people with disabilities including visual, hearing, motor, and cognitive impairments. WCAG guidelines establish criteria for text alternatives, color contrast, keyboard navigation, and structure clarity.     WCAG Conformance Levels

    WCAG Level A is basic accessibility (alternative text for images, keyboard navigation). Level AA is the standard compliance level (color contrast ratios, captions, consistent navigation). Level AAA is enhanced accessibility (higher contrast, more detailed captions). Most organizations target Level AA compliance; AAA is aspirational.     Accessibility is technical—does the product work with assistive technology? Inclusion is broader—do people with different abilities feel welcome and valued? Accessibility is a prerequisite for inclusion but not sufficient. Inclusive design considers diverse abilities in content, culture, and community from the start.

    Low color contrast (fails colorblind users), missing alt text on images (fails screen reader users), keyboard-inaccessible buttons (fails motor-impaired users), auto-playing video without captions (fails deaf users), and confusing navigation structure (fails cognitive-impaired users). These are fixable with design review and testing with assistive technology.

    Combine automated testing (contrast checkers, HTML validation), manual testing (keyboard-only navigation, screen reader testing), and user testing with people with disabilities. Tools include WAVE, Axe, and Lighthouse, but human testing with assistive tech is essential. Many teams contract accessibility audits annually with specialized firms.
