What is Skills Inventory?
Definition
A Skills Inventory is a comprehensive catalog or database of the skills, competencies, and expertise present across an organization's workforce. A skills inventory maps individual employees to their capabilities, enabling better project staffing, identifying skill gaps, and planning training and hiring needs. Modern skills inventories are often maintained in HR systems or specialized skills platforms and updated regularly as employees develop new capabilities.

Building and Maintaining Inventory
Data collection can be employee self-assessment (quick, but subject to bias), manager assessment (more accurate, but time-intensive), skills testing (objective, but limited to easily testable skills), or combination. Maintenance is critical—skills inventories become stale and useless within months if not updated. Tie updates to performance reviews, training completion, or project rotations. The more current your inventory, the more valuable for staffing and development.
