What is Annual Contract Value (ACV)?

    Definition

Annual Contract Value (ACV) is the average dollar value of a customer's yearly commitment, calculated by dividing total contract value by the number of years in the contract. ACV is a key financial metric that represents predictable, normalized revenue per customer account. For SaaS and subscription businesses, ACV directly impacts pricing strategy, sales compensation, and growth projections.

    In short

    ACV at a glance.

Average yearly revenue per customer contract
Used for pricing and compensation decisions
    Normalizes multi-year and variable contracts
Enterprise sales focus on growing ACV

    ACV vs ARR

ACV measures the value of individual customer contracts on an annual basis, while ARR aggregates the total recurring revenue across all active subscriptions in a given year. A company with high average ACV focuses on larger enterprise deals, while one optimizing ARR may combine large enterprise accounts with many smaller mid-market accounts. Knowing both metrics provides a complete revenue picture.

    ACV — frequently asked

Take the total contract value and divide by the contract term in years. For example, a 3-year enterprise deal worth 300,000 dollars has an ACV of 100,000 dollars. Some teams also track 'blended ACV' which factors in different contract lengths across the customer base.

High-ACV businesses often need more complex onboarding, customer success, and support infrastructure. High-ACV also means sales cycles are longer and deal risk is concentrated in fewer customers. Teams managing high-ACV businesses prioritize customer retention and expansion differently than volume-based, low-ACV businesses.

Increase prices on renewal, add features or seats to existing customers, move upmarket to larger enterprises, or bundle complementary products. For learning platforms, bundling skills courses with compliance training can meaningfully increase ACV per account.
