What is Kirkpatrick Model?
Definition
The Kirkpatrick Model is a four-level framework for evaluating training effectiveness developed by Donald Kirkpatrick. The levels are: Reaction (learner satisfaction), Learning (knowledge gain), Behavior (on-the-job application), and Results (business impact). The model guides systematic evaluation from immediate satisfaction through long-term business outcomes, though measurement complexity increases at each level.

From Satisfaction to Business Impact
The Kirkpatrick Model prevents organizations from stopping at feedback surveys. Evaluating only Level 1 (reaction) is cheap but misses actual learning and impact. A course might be well-liked but ineffective (high reaction, low behavior change). Advanced organizations measure through Level 3 or 4, correlating training participation with job performance, sales metrics, or retention rates. This requires time and effort but demonstrates training's true ROI.
