    What is Provisioning (SCIM)?

    Definition

Provisioning (specifically SCIM provisioning) is the automated process of creating, updating, and disabling user accounts across multiple systems based on a single source of truth like an HRIS. When someone is hired, SCIM automatically creates their account in the learning platform with correct permissions, roles, and groups. Provisioning eliminates manual account setup and ensures consistency.

Automates user account creation across systems
Syncs from HRIS as source of truth
    Eliminates manual setup and errors
Enables immediate access for new employees

    Provisioning for enterprise onboarding

Manual provisioning is a bottleneck. IT must create accounts, assign roles, configure permissions—delays that slow employee productivity. Automated provisioning (via SCIM protocol) connects the HRIS to all systems. When HR enters a new employee, accounts appear instantly in the LMS, email, and tools with correct permissions. Offboarding is also automated: when an employee leaves, all accounts are disabled simultaneously.

    SCIM — frequently asked

SCIM (System for Cross-domain Identity Management) is a standard protocol for automating user provisioning across systems. It defines how to create, read, update, and delete user accounts and groups.

Most modern platforms support SCIM: Okta, Azure AD, Google Workspace, and leading LMS and SaaS applications. Legacy systems may require custom integrations.

User identity (name, email, ID), group membership, role and permissions, manager relationships, and department. Custom attributes can be provisioned depending on platform support.
