Summative Assessment is a high-stakes evaluation that measures overall learning outcomes at the end of a course, module, or program. Summative assessments include final exams, capstone projects, certification exams, and performance evaluations. They determine whether a learner has achieved the learning objectives and often carry grades or certification implications. Unlike formative assessment (which guides learning), summative assessment measures and certifies mastery.

These high-stakes assessments carry consequences—pass or fail, hire or not hire, advance or repeat. Because stakes are high, summative assessments must be rigorous and fair: aligned to objectives, covering breadth, and free from bias.
