What is cmi5?
Definition
cmi5 is a profile of xAPI that defines a standardized contract between a Learning Management System and learning content (often called SCORM's successor). It specifies exactly how an LMS launches content, what data it must track, and how content communicates completion and performance back to the LMS. cmi5 combines xAPI's flexibility with SCORM's structural rigor, making content portable and data predictable.

cmi5: SCORM Reimagined on xAPI
cmi5 solves portability without sacrificing structure. With SCORM, content and LMS agree on a narrow contract (pass/fail, completion). With cmi5, that contract is much richer—it can track attempts, mastery, interactions, and more—yet it is still strict enough that content built for one LMS runs in another. This makes cmi5 attractive for enterprises with heterogeneous learning infrastructure or content vendors serving multiple customers.
